Step 4: Author's Promotion and Publicity Plan
Ok, don’t get nervous and don’t quit on me! We can work with what you have and I’ll share some tips and tricks on how to work around having a small or non-existent platform.
This is the section you’re going to describe your platform. This includes information about your website, mailing list, speaking engagements, writing outlets, and more. (I’ll share additional helpful promotional places - insider tips that I know you haven’t thought of yet).
It’s important in this section to be specific. You’ll do things like include links to your website and social media pages, and list exact numbers of your followers, mailing list subscribers, number of comments and shares of your articles, etc. If you’re not brand new to publishing (even if you’ve self-published in the past) you’ll want to include that book title and its sales figures.
Another element of this section is to offer a few ideas on how you will support the launch and marketing of your book. Publishing companies are looking to you to be an active participant in promoting your book, because the day of passive promotion is over. Ideas they are looking for could include:
Will you be creating Facebook Live videos?
Going on a book promotional tour?
Writing guest blog posts?
Hiring a PR firm?
They’ll also be looking for if you have done things like this in the past - if so, you’ll include it here as well.
This is also the section to share if a notable person is writing a foreword or endorsement for you and helping to promote your book. This is an opportunity to include details about their platform as well.
This is weighty section, so we’ll go through an example of successful promotion and publicity plan.
